Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions, although some of these principles may apply to other standards this FAQ is concerned mainly with ISO 9000. Please contact us for information concerning anything not covered here.

What is ISO 9000:2000?

ISO 9000:2000 is an internationally recognised set of quality standards, describing proven methods of world class management systems. The International Organization of Standardization recommends these standards.

ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 are individual standards but are nearly identical (see here), whereas ISO 9004 is a document containing examples and guidance for ISO 9001.

Is BS EN ISO 9001 different from ISO 9001?

BS EN ISO 9001:2000 contains vital information for organisations that need to comply with the "New Approach" European Directives in order to affix CE marking on products and to the other parties involved in that process. The British ISO 9000 however, does not have a lot of additional requirements.

What about ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994?

These standards have been withdrawn and incorporated into ISO 9000:2000, but if you are already registered with these then the transition must be made by 2003.

What are the benefits to my organisation?

Clients are becoming more and more aware of Quality Assurance standards and if they are not already requiring them, your competitors certainly will be.

The UK Government also endorses ISO 9000 as a useful management tool for business and it is well recognised in the European Community.

Having an effective Quality Management System will identify key roles and tasks in your organisation, which can help motivate your staff and improve efficiency.

What do I need to do to achieve this standard?

Accredited consultancy is an absolute MUST. All materials, training and manuals should be properly specified for your business, as ISO 9000:2000 is now suitable for small businesses the specification can vary a great deal. A properly accredited consultant will assure that you will meet the requirements for a successful certification assessment.

Where can we obtain suitable training/consultation?

We cannot offer or recommend any consultancy service ourselves, but a local business BMS offers these services should you wish to judge for yourself. Always look for accreditation, it is not a legal requirement so some less-reputable companies may not be properly accredited.
